![]() Kite fighting is helping people to make money as well. This has been a tradition in their culture. The younger generations have an opportunity to be taught by their fathers how to fly a kite. Since Afghanistan has seen a lot of violence, kite fighting is a way to take their minds off of such negative situations. Kite fighting is beginning to become more popular again and this is a positive thing. When the Taliban were in control, kite fighting was unacceptable in Afghanistan. However, both have one thing in common, people coming together to have a good time. Kite fighting has many differences to the entertainment we know in Canada. While the Toronto Maple Leafs are battling in the ACC, Afghan kite fighters are battling in Tapeii-i-Maranjan, just outside their capital city. ![]() Just as we have the Air Canada Centre as a hockey hotspot in Canada, Afghanistan has specific kite fighting locations. It is a sport for all ages and all types of people. This reveals that the social class of a kite fighter is irrelevant. The article that I researched says that “Schoolchildren were fighting ministerial officials, doctors were battling day laborers” (Semple). This is the way that kite fighting is in Afghanistan. That whole stadium was filled with different political views, ethnicities and included fans from all around the world, but one common interest brought us together. To be in a stadium with thousands of other people gathered for the same event was an amazing experience. Over the christmas break I had the privilege of attending some World Junior hockey games in Toronto between Canada and other top hockey countries in the world. Just like Saturday nights are Hockey Night in Canada, Friday nights are the prime kite flying time in Afghanistan.Ĭanada is brought together by hockey just as Afghanistan is brought together by kite fighting. Kite flying in Afghanistan, is like hockey in Canada. It shows the roughness and tension between the relationship. This shows that even though Hassan is hurt in a different way than Amir that there is hurt and scarring on both accounts. The red and black backgrounds pictured both have harsh lines scraping through the background. Hassan has been raped and mentally scarred which can be compared to cracking and broken concrete which the font represents. Hassan’s name is written in a “broken” font to show that Amir has broken his friend. Hassan is willing to take all of the weight for Amir and Amir would not help Hassan when he was in need. This represents the effort that each is willing to put forward for each other is completely different. Hassan’s side is loaded up with boxes whereas Amir’s side has a tiny box on it. A teeter totter is also used to represent the unevenness. I have also used a broken heart symbol to signify the brokenness of their friendship. This represents the lopsidedness of the relationship because even when Hassan is on his knees giving so much to Amir, Amir walks away. Amir is pictured in nice clothes walking away from Hassan with his back turned. This represents the loyalty that Hassan shows. Furthermore, Hassan is pictured on his knees begging for Amir’s attention even though he is seen with red marks, beat up clothes and scars all because of this same friend. ![]() ![]() Amir’s side is black because this represents the darkness that he shows towards Hassan. One side is red and that is Hassan’s side because it represents his scars and wounds that Amir has left him with. It pictures the paper being divided in half by a broken line. The artwork that I chose helps to reveal the lopsided relationship very well. Amir views Hassan as a currency that he exchanges for Baba’s love. The friendship between has a much higher value to Hassan than to Amir and this is obvious when evaluating the two characters. Amir is a fake friend to Hassan and we start to question whether he cares about Hassan at all. It goes along with my theme of the relationship because it reveals how Hassan is willing to help Amir as a friend but Amir simply uses him as a pawn to benefit himself. I chose the specific quote for my visual paragraph because it outlines the uneven relationship between Hassan and Amir.
